Born in Scotland, Mitchell King arrived in Charleston, South Carolina in 1805. In 1806 King became an assistant teacher at the College of Charleston. Interested in studying law, King began studies at the office of George Warren Cross in 1807. King was temporarily appointed principal of the College of Charleston in 1810.
